Samsung Wallet & Google Wallet: A Beginner’s Guide

Fast. Easy. Secure. Tap phone jer.

Think about the last time you paid for something.

Maybe it was a coffee before work, snacks from 7-11, paid for lunch or groceries after a long day. Chances are, you either reached for your wallet or opened your eWallet to scan a QR code.

But what if you could simply tap your phone or smartwatch to pay instead?

With Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet, you can use your compatible phone or smartwatch to make secure contactless payments with just a tap wherever Visa contactless payments are accepted.

If you’re new to Samsung Wallet or Google Wallet, here’s everything you need to know.

What Are Samsung Wallet & Google Wallet?

Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet are digital wallet apps that let you securely store your eligible payment cards on your compatible phone or smartwatch.

Once you’ve added your Merchantrade Money Visa card, simply unlock your device and tap to pay wherever Visa contactless payments are accepted worldwide. You can also enjoy faster checkout at participating websites and apps without entering your card details every time.

Why Pay with Your Phone?

Chances are your phone is probably already in your hand.

Whether you’re checking messages, looking up directions or browsing while waiting in line, it’s often easier to pay with the device you’re already using.

Instead of reaching for your wallet, simply unlock your compatible phone or smartwatch and tap to pay. It’s a quick, convenient way to pay for everyday purchases, whether you’re shopping in-store or checking out online.

Where Can You Use It?

You can use Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet anywhere Visa contactless payments are accepted, including many supermarkets, convenience stores, petrol stations, pharmacies, shopping malls and retail chains in Malaysia

🛒 Groceries
💊 Pharmacy essentials
🍔 Fast food

Simply unlock your compatible phone or smartwatch and tap to pay at supported contactless payment terminals.

Online & In Apps
Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet can make online checkout faster and easier too.

Instead of entering your card number, expiry date and security code each time, you can securely check out with just a few taps at participating websites and apps.

Whether you’re ordering food, booking tickets, shopping online or subscribing to your favourite services, it’s one less step between you and completing your purchase.

Not every online merchant supports Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet yet, but acceptance continues to grow.

Tap Phone To Pay vs QR Payments. What’s the Difference?

Many Malaysians already use DuitNow QR, so you might be wondering whether you need both.

The best part? You don’t have to choose one over the other. Use the payment method that best suits the moment.

Tap your phone or smartwatch Scan a QR code using your eWallet
Uses Visa contactless terminals Uses DuitNow QR or merchant QR
Great for quick tap-and-go payments Common at hawker stalls, pasar malam and smaller merchants

QR payments are commonly used at hawker stalls, pasar malam and smaller merchants, while Tap Phone To Pay is ideal wherever Visa contactless payments are accepted. Most Malaysians will likely use both depending on where they’re shopping.

Great For Travel Too

Travelling overseas? Paying is just as easy with Samsung Wallet or Google Wallet.

Whether you’re catching the MRT in Singapore, grabbing a coffee in Tokyo, shopping in Seoul or paying for groceries in Australia, you can use your compatible phone or smartwatch wherever Visa contactless payments are accepted.

With your Merchantrade Money multi-currency Visa card, you can spend directly from your available foreign currency balances. It’s a convenient way to travel while avoiding the foreign exchange conversion and overseas transaction fees that many traditional bank cards may charge.

Payment acceptance may vary depending on the country and merchant, so it’s always a good idea to check before you travel.

Is It Safe?

Yes. Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet are designed with multiple layers of security to help protect your payments.

Before a payment can be made, you’ll need to verify your identity using your fingerprint, face recognition or device passcode.

When you make a payment, your actual card number isn’t shared with the merchant. Instead, it uses tokenisation, which replaces your card details with a unique digital token during each transaction.

If you’re using Samsung Wallet, your payment information is also protected by Samsung Knox, Samsung’s defence-grade security platform designed to help safeguard your device and payment credentials.

Together, these security features help protect your payment information whether you’re shopping in-store or online.
